We recently purchased a 13 year old retired Roping horse. He has arthritis in his front right shoulder. When we brought him home his limp was obvious. Trotting or loping him was out of the question. He was very uncomfortable and would bob his head at the walk. We tried some expensive joint lubricant, but after one month still saw no change. So we decided to get back to basics and ordered Glucosamine XL. We started him on a full scoop twice a day. Within a week he was feeling much better and his limp was barely noticable. Now, 3 weeks later my 11 year old daughter and he got a 5th place ribbon in Western Walk/Trot!!! He has no ambitions for the big league, but he will be comfortable at whatever he does now. I am a pharmacist and I consider the same clinical features for my horses that I recommend for people I serve professionally. In the medical field, Glucosamine Sulfate is clearly supported as effective for its benefits to joints. The "sulfate" is considered more beneficial than the "HCL" salt of glucosamine. Also, chondroitin is an expensive material to obtain - it is questionable whether the true amount, if any, is indeed found in many products (this is true in human products), as quality testing is not required of this type of product. I feel the Glucosamine XL with the glucosamine sulfate delivers the most essential nutrient for benefiting joints of those I've recently reviewed when going to purchase a product for my animals and at a reasonable price.
