What is Clavamox used for?
Clavamox is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat multiple types of bacterial infections.
For:
Dogs and cats.
Benefits:
Used in the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections such as wounds, abscesses and cellulitis.
May be used in cats for urinary tract infections (cystitis) due to susceptible strains of E. coli.
Effective for treating cases of canine periodontal disease.
How it works:
Clavamox combines amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Clavulanic acid may cause some bacteria which are normally resistant to amoxicillin to become sensitive to that antibiotic.
What you should know:
Clavamox is absorbed easily and diffuses readily into most body tissues and fluids, making it effective against infections in many parts of the body. It is effective against many types of bacteria.
How to give this medication:
The recommended dosage of Clavamox Tablets for dogs is 6.25 mg/lb body weight twice per day. The recommended dosage of Clavamox Tablets for cats is 62.5 mg twice per day. Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions, ask the veterinarian or pharmacist to explain them to you.
If you miss a dose:
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and give the next one as directed. Do not double dose.
Clavamox should not be used in:
Do not use Clavamox in animals with a history of an allergic reaction to any of the penicillins or cephalosporins. Clavamox is not for use in pregnant or breeding animals.
Possible side effects:
Clavamox contains a semisynthetic penicillin (amoxicillin) and has the potential for producing allergic reactions. Side effects may include lack of appetite, drooling, vomiting or diarrhea. Contact your veterinarian in you observe any of these side effects.
