Swine Dewormers
Swine Dewormers for Herd Health
Worms in a hog herd rarely announce themselves. You see them first in slower gains, rough coats, and feed that doesn't convert the way it should. Valley Vet Supply's veterinarian founders treated cattle, horses, and pets at a mixed-animal clinic in Marysville, Kansas, before starting the company in 1985. Our swine dewormer lineup includes injectables for internal and external parasites and a feed-through option for treating whole groups at once, so you can match the product to how your operation actually runs.
Types of Swine Dewormers
Swine dewormers come in two main forms. Injectables let you give each pig a measured dose and also knock back external parasites like lice and mange mites. Feed-through products treat a whole group at once with no extra handling.
- Ivomec 1% Injection for Cattle and Swine: Ivermectin injectable that controls gastrointestinal roundworms, lungworms, lice, and mange mites in swine. Give 1 mL per 75 lb under the skin of the neck. Sold in several bottle sizes.
- Doramectin 1% Injectable Solution for Cattle and Swine: Durvet's 10 mg/ml doramectin covers roundworms, lungworms, kidney worms, sucking lice, and mange mites. Give 1 mL per 75 lb, intramuscular only.
- Safeguard Swine: A feed dewormer for large roundworms, whipworms, nodular worms, lungworms, kidney worms, and small stomach worms. Mix 20 lbs into 2,480 lbs of complete feed and feed it as the sole ration for 3 to 12 days. One 20 lb bag treats about 330 pigs at 50 lbs each.
Building a Deworming Program
Sow and Grower Schedules
Many producers deworm sows before farrowing so piglets start cleaner. Growers are often treated at weaning or when they move to the finisher. Work with your vet to rotate products and slow resistance.
Signs Your Herd Needs Deworming
Watch for poor gains, coughing, and rubbing. Milk spots on livers at slaughter are another clue. Control external pests with Swine Fly & Lice products and keep Swine Vaccines current.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should sows be dewormed?
Many operations deworm sows before breeding and again before farrowing, but the right interval depends on your facilities and parasite load. Fecal testing and your herd veterinarian can set a sow deworming program that fits. Treating sows before farrowing also cuts down on the worm eggs piglets are exposed to in the farrowing crate.
Can dewormer be mixed into feed for the whole herd?
Yes, with a product labeled for it. Safeguard Swine mixes at 20 lbs per 2,480 lbs of complete feed and is fed for 3 to 12 days. Mix it evenly so every pig gets a full dose.
Are injectable or feed-based dewormers more effective?
Each has its strengths. Injectables like Ivomec and doramectin give each pig a measured dose and also control lice and mange mites. Safeguard Swine lists whipworms, which the injectables here don't name, so many programs use both.
