Goat & Sheep Vaccines
Goat & Sheep Vaccines
Overeating disease and tetanus can take a healthy kid or lamb fast, and both are largely preventable with vaccination. Valley Vet Supply was started in 1985 by two veterinarians who ran a mixed-animal practice in Marysville, Kansas, and we still stock the goat and sheep vaccines small ruminant producers rely on. This collection covers CDT, soremouth, and caseous lymphadenitis vaccines. We've pulled the dosing and timing straight from each label so you can plan your flock's year with your vet.
Core Vaccines for Goats & Sheep
CD&T is the core vaccine for nearly every goat and sheep operation. Bar-Vac CD/T Cattle, Sheep and Goat Vaccine protects against Clostridium perfringens types C and D, the cause of overeating disease, and Clostridium tetani. Sheep and goats get 2 mL under the skin, repeated in 21 to 28 days, then once a year.
The Ovine Ecthyma (Sore mouth) Goat and Sheep Vaccine is applied to the skin inside the flank after scratching it with the notched applicator handle. It's meant for flocks with a known soremouth history, and because it's a live vaccine that can infect people, wear gloves when you handle it. Case-Bac Sheep Vaccine aids in preventing caseous lymphadenitis in healthy sheep, and its listing warns it may cause injection-site swelling, lethargy, stiffness, and fever in goats, so talk to your vet before using it there.
Vaccinating by Life Stage
Pregnant Does and Ewes
Breeding animals are commonly boosted with CD&T 2 to 4 weeks before kidding or lambing, which passes antibodies to newborns through colostrum. That timing puts antibody levels near their peak while the colostrum is being made. Make sure each newborn nurses within the first few hours of life so it actually gets that protection.
Kids, Lambs and Annual Boosters
Kids and lambs usually get their first CD&T shot around 6 to 8 weeks of age, followed by a booster. Adults get an annual booster. Stock up on Needles & Syringes and Goat & Sheep Dewormers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What vaccine do all goats and sheep need?
CD&T is the core vaccine for goats and sheep. It protects against overeating disease caused by Clostridium perfringens types C and D, and against tetanus. Because these diseases can kill quickly, most vets treat CD&T as essential for every animal on the place.
When should lambs and kids get their first shots?
Most get their first CDT vaccine around 6 to 8 weeks of age, followed by a booster. Bar-Vac's label calls for the repeat dose 21 to 28 days later. Kids and lambs from vaccinated dams get early protection through colostrum.
Can I give CDT vaccine myself?
Yes, most producers do. Bar-Vac CD/T is given under the skin, and your vet can show you good injection sites. Some locations may require a veterinary license or prescription to purchase, so check before you order.
