I have been using Brute insecticide for several years now, after trying other concentrated insecticide products. Brute is much less expensive and works very well here in Iowa.
I apply Brute about once every 7-10 or as needed on my herd of 10+ horses. I like the reservoir that you can prefill with the correct dose for each horse. This eliminates any guessing about how much to apply.
I hate using an applicator mitt -- it seems like a huge amount of expensive product ends up in the mitt and on me, instead of on the horse.
I also have found that you don't need to cover the whole animal to get good results. Instead, I dip a small wool dauber into the reservoir, then wipe the product onto the horse. You could use a small foam or bristle paint brush instead.
On my Norwegian Fjords, I wipe a stripe of Brute down the front and back of each leg, one strip down the middle of the face (avoiding the eyes and muzzle), and another stripe or two down the horse's back to discourage flies. I also put a stripe down the middle of the tummy and a small swipe in each ear to eliminate flies, gnats and ticks.
On my biggest horses (a Belgian and a Shire-Percheron), I'll do the same as for the Fjords, but I'll add an extra swipe or two along the neck and chest.
Because the product is concentrated, I follow the dosage directions carefully. The product is not recommended for use on foals under 12 weeks of age, so I avoid putting Brute anywhere near the teats of nursing mares or where a foal could rub up against the product on the mare's coat. After applying Brute, I also wash my hands carefully. Is this testimonial helpful?
