***Read this if you are not sure of buying a helmet**
Let me just say I have been riding since I was 3 yrs old, showing and rodeoing, however had only in recent years started wearing a helmet.I just replaced my helmet with another "sport" by troxel and you will see why after this story. I had had my helmet for 6yrs and it just recently more than paid for itself. I have a 7yo fairly green broke appy (that is back in training with a trainer for obvious reasons)that had been doing well on his rides, I had even had him out alone twice, but had always wore a helmet when on him. He has a past that involved him not always being treated well and as a result had bucked off me 2x and one other person prior to me aquiring him that we know of. This last incident, I was just mounting at a local trailhead as my friend was getting on her's (who was also known to buck and has thrown her many times, and is now in training with my trainer). Again we are both experienced riders. However, as my horse spooked, I didn't stand a chance as my right leg wasn't even in the stirrup, maybe that was a good thing. He went sideways and I came off and rolled left ( he was on my right) in the pasture and when playing he bucks and his rear feet go out in every direction, well good thing I rolled left, yes I landed on my lower back and it hurt but as I rolled left, I felt something "shove" the back left and middle area of my helmet. My horse than ran towards my friend's horse which panicked and it threw her, after an hour we caught them--thank goodness they weren't hit as they got out onto a main road--although we may have wanted to kill them! Ha Ha.. Anyway after getting them back and working them in a round pen that is at the trail head, and making sure we did get on them in the pen atleast, we loaded them up. I removed my helmet cover and that is when I saw the damage... a 4-5 inch (zig zag crack) down the center and off to the left of the back of the helmet, that would have been my skull! Or my face had I not rolled over. My friend said she will be buying a helmet as well when her horse comes back from training. Some think you are weak if you wear a helmet, I think you are smart and may save your own life, lets face it horses are great, but they are animals and things happen. My other friend has gone through two helmets and swears by Troxel, just as I do now!
