By enhancing insulin sensitivity, Metformin helps regulate blood sugar levels, potentially reducing the risk of laminitis linked to equine metabolic syndrome. This medication works by increasing insulin’s ability to transport glucose across cell membranes, decreasing hepatic glucose production and may also lower intestinal glucose absorption, promoting better glycemic control. It does not stimulate insulin production or release from the pancreas and therefore does not cause hypoglycemia.
